Servers

A server is simply a computer that has been given the function of "serving" a

particular need to multiple users. These functions can range from file/printer

sharing and hosted email to centralized database storage and hardware firewall

functionality.

Servers are the heart of a working network. They must be built with the best

hardware and given special care to be sure that they provide their resources to all

who need to access them. The data that is stored on them needs to be backed up,

preferably to more than one location, at least one of which should be in a

geographically different location. To protect sensitive data, permissions to the files

need to be assigned so that the appropriate individuals have access to what they

need, but not more.

Many small businesses feel that they don't need a server, let alone several of them.
